Kin-in-law

Yesterday we celebrated much as we always do - with the hub's family. To say he has a large extended family would be an understatement. And from someone who comes from a family tree the size of a bonsai, it is always overwhelming.

We celebrate 3 birthdays on the 4th - the nation's, his g'mother's and his cousin. I've always kinda felt sorry for the cousin, now that the g'mother is in her 90's, the poor cousin kinda gets overlooked in all of the festivities.

We've missed 2 of the 4 married years (honeymoon, year 1 and vacation, year 3). Everybody and their brother, cousin and kid was there yesterday. I think it's because the hub's g'mother's health is rapidly declining and no one thinks that we'll be celebrating with her next year. That's the ginormous elephant in the room.

It's funny, the woman has 20+ grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren... yet I am her favorite. She likes my hair and I am one of the few that talks to her like a real person, everyone else baby talks to her or talks very loudly & slowly. Her hearing is just fine, and talking slower doesn't help the dementia. She can't communicate much anymore, though, she clearly said, "Thank you, Alison" to me for the treats I made for the get-together. It drives the rest of the grandkids nuts!

This year I chose to bring 2 kids of brownies to the picnic: miniature brownie cups and "Three Great Tastes Blondie Brownies". They were a hit!
